Obituary of William E. Stein
Mr. William E. “Bill” Stein, 90, of 42703 Russell Rd. Centerville, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Stein was born on June 16, 1919 in Cleveland, OH, a son of the late Rev. W. E. Stein and Olga Reichie Stein. He was married to Florence Helm on July 14, 1945. She preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 2002.
Mr. Stein was a graduate of East Technical High School in Cleveland, OH. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He enlisted on April 18, 1942 at Cleveland, OH. He trained at Ft. Bragg, NC and served as an MP at Kessler Field in Biloxi, Miss. He later trained as a gunner and flew 35 missions in Europe before being discharged on Oct. 31, 1945 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana with the rank of staff sergeant.
Mr. Stein was owner with his father of Keystone Press, a printing business, until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; the Cleo J. Ross Post No. 368 American Legion and of the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW. He was an avid fan of almost all sports.
Bill is survived by his caregivers, Shonette Hathaway and Barbara Weis; a son, William E. Stein of State College, TX; a daughter, Sally Huston of Cleveland, OH; several grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a sister, Jane Kelley of Cincinnati, OH.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Stein.
No public calling hours will be observed. Friends may attend a memorial service on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home with Mrs. Jacqueline Wagner, senior assistant to the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Full military rites will be conducted by officers and members of the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW and the Cleo J. Ross Post No. 3689 American Legion.
Interment will be in Knollwood Cemetery in Mayfield Heights, OH.
The family asks that memorials be made to the American Foundation for the Blind 2 Penn Plaza Suite 1102 New York, NY 10121 or to the charity of one’s choice.
