Obituary of Ruth McCandless Proper
Mrs. Ruth McCandless Proper, 86, formerly of Titusville, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, January 27, 2016 at the Brookville Hospital surrounded by her family. She had moved to Brookville three years ago to be closer to her daughter Candace.
She was born at Bradleytown, PA on April 21, 1929 to the late A. Scott and Marie Heilig McCandless and lived most of her life in Rocky Grove.
Ruth was a graduate of Rocky Grove High School, class of 1946.
Ruth married Daniel E. Proper Sr., on March 7, 1947 in Titusville by Rev. Albert Broadhurst of St. James Memorial Episcopal Church at which time she moved to Titusville and raised her family. Mr. Proper preceded her in death on October 8, 2006.
Ruth had been employed for a number of years at the former M&M Hallmark Store and also at Sylvania and Grant’s Credit Office.
Ruth was a member of the Capt. R. L. Green Detachment No. 292 Marine Corp. League Ladies Auxiliary where she held detachment and state positions and helped with the gun shows in Titusville. She was also a member of the Cleo J. Ross Post No. 368 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Ruth enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, reading, doing puzzles of all kinds, and family gatherings during the holidays.
Ruth is survived by three sons, Daniel E. Proper Jr. of Titusville, Terry Proper and wife Mildred of Titusville, and Jack Proper and wife Sharon of Erie; a daughter, Candace Straitiff and husband Larry of Brookville; grandchildren, Jeffrey McGregor of Punxsutawney, Jesse Hinderliter of Pittsburgh, Daniel E. Proper III and wife Shelly of Titusville, Jack E. “J.J.” Proper and wife Amber of North Carolina, Matthew Proper and wife Marley of Erie, Autumn Miller and husband Derek of Meadville, Shawnette Mudge and husband Rich of NYC, NY, and Shannon Proper Shuster of Mercer; numerous great grandchildren; a sister, Dawnice Umstead of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters; Darathea White, Wanda Barker, Geraldine Kurtich, Elanor, Albert, Harold, Willis, and Johnny McCandless, and an infant son.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville, PA 16354 on Sunday from 2 to 4 PM. A private service will be conducted on Monday for the family by Rev. Canon Martha Ishman of St. James Memorial Episcopal Church officiating.
Interment will be in Sunville Cemetery.
