Obituary of Rodney R. Herring

Rodney R. Herring, 85, of Centerville passed away in the early morning hours of April 6, 2016 at St. Vincent Health Center. He was surrounded by his family and much love as he passed peacefully from a well-lived life. Rodney was born on April 24, 1930 in Tryonville, PA. He was the son of Pauline D. and Virgil C. Herring. He married Sylvia M. Rosequist on August 21, 1954 and they were married for nearly 62 years. Rodney graduated from Townville High School in 1948. Along with his life-long friend and neighbor, William O. Nicols, he enlisted in the United States Army shortly after graduation and served as a Supply Sargent for an evacuation hospital during the Korean Conflict. Throughout his life, Rodney enjoyed playing softball, bowling, hunting, boating and snowmobiling with his family and friends. Rodney was a talented craftsman and carpenter and owned his own construction company along with his son, Dale for over 40 years. In addition to his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by his brothers Jesse, Ralph and Virgil as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law. He is survived by his wife Sylvia, his daughter Regina Cocolin of Erie and his son R. Dale “Scooter” Herring and his wife Jennifer of Erie. He will forever be “Papa D” to his four grandsons, Nicholas (and his wife Jen) and Nathan Cocolin and Brandon and Christian Herring and his great-grandchildren Tyler Smith, Chase and Mia Cocolin. Rodney is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as many, many good friends. Family and friends will be received at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Glen Van Cise, pastor of the Chapmanville Community Church, officiating. Full military honors will be observed. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Hospital so they may continue providing the kind of support that Rodney received for others in the future.
