Obituary of Donald A. English
Mr. Donald A. English, 74, of 313 N. Monroe St., Titusville died peacefully at home at 9:52 AM on Wednesday, January 13, 2010.
Mr. English was born on October 17, 1935 in Titusville to the late Cletus M. and Madeline C. Karg English. He married Jo Ann Hassenfratz on Feb. 7, 1959 in Titusville, PA.
Don was a 1953 graduate of St. Joseph Academy. He served in the US Army from Aug. 15, 1955 to May 29, 1957. He spent 16 months stationed in Korea working with the Army Postal Service. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Specialist 1st class.
Mr. English was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from September 1957 to January 1992 serving as Postmaster for 18 years. During that time, he became a certified Postmaster trainer and a US Postal Service Management Advocate. He was a member of the Regional Safety Force Team, Postmaster Selection Committee, Erie Management Section Center Tornado Relief Committee, the Promotion Advisory Board, and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.
After retirement from the Postal Service, Mr. English was a financial advisor in Titusville with IDS Financial Services, a subsidiary of American Express. Subsequently he joined HBK Sorce and retired in 2008.
Don was a life long member of Saint Titus Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the VFW. He was a board member of the Titusville YMCA. He delighted in spending time with his 13 grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and especially enjoyed his time outdoors at the camp in Little Cooley.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn of Titusville; five children, Margaret “Peg” Avallone and husband Joseph of Mullica Hill, NJ, Mary Beth Head and husband Mark of Cranberry Twp.PA, Stephen English and wife Greta of Harmony, PA, Susan Zuccaro and husband Gus of Cranberry Twp., PA, Jeannie Ferguson and husband Bill of Seven Fields, PA, and George Hassenfratz of Belchertown, Mass. Don is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, Michael and Madeline Avallone, Ashley, Lauren and Allison Head, Luke, Olivia, Matthew and Jonathan English, Lindsay and Nina Zuccaro, Andy and Coryn Ferguson; four brothers, Robert English and wife Rosemary of Rocky River, OH, Gerald English and wife Carol of Naples, FL, David English and wife Barbara of Titusville, James English and wife Joan of Hilton Head, SC; four sisters, Mary Beth Wager of Rome, NY, Jeanne English of Oil City, Patricia Powers and husband Francis of Salix, PA, Barbara Calka and husband John of Conemaugh, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. English was preceded in death by a sister, Margery Dowling.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St., Titusville on Saturday from 7 to 9 PM and on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A Vigil Service will be conducted from the funeral home on Sunday at 8:45 PM with Fr. James G. Gutting, officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Titus Church on Monday at 11:00 AM with Fr. James G. Gutting, pastor of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Erie officiating.
Interment will be in St. Catharine’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 310 N. Monroe Street, Titusville, the Titusville YMCA building fund or Saint Titus Church.
