Obituary of Katherine V. Nuhfer
Katherine Virginia Etzel Nuhfer, 88, of Townville, passed away Monday, July 18, 2016 at Wesbury United Methodist Community in Meadville where she had been a resident for a year and a half.
She was born at home in Shippenville, Clarion County, on January 1, 1928. She was the oldest of nine children of Berlie R. Sr. and Anna C. Wagner Etzel. She was married to Wayne Edwin Nuhfer on May 20, 1948 who survives.
She graduated salutatorian of her class in 1945 from Ashland Consolidated High School in Kossuth. She attended Penn State University, Huron Road School of Nursing in East Cleveland, OH, and was a long distance telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Oil City and Erie.
She had been a member of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church of Saegertown; a former member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church of Shippenville; Calvary Lutheran of East Cleveland, OH; Peace Lutheran of Chardon, OH; and the Townville United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for twenty years.
Katherine and her husband had provided a foster home for eight children in Ohio and Pennsylvania over the years.
For seven years the family owned and operated a dairy farm at Troy Center and the Red and White Store for fifteen years in Townville. She had been a TOPS member for twenty years holding various offices. She was also a member of the Townville Women’s Club.
She enjoyed gardening, tending her flower beds, camping, traveling, and working crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Having a house full of children and grandkids was a real joy for her.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Steven Nuhfer and his wife Dianna of Townville, and Carl Nuhfer of Los Angeles, CA; three daughters, Vivian Mohl and her husband William of Guys Mills, Kandy Foote and her husband Victor of Meadville, and Anna Voller of Kittaning; 11 grandchildren, Jamie Copeland and wife Jennifer of Clifton, VA, Chad Copeland of Vienna, WV, Sean Nuhfer and his wife Jennifer of Cambridge Springs, Angela Copeland Marshall and her husband Kelly, Shannon Nuhfer and his wife Rachel of Lexington Park, MD, Toni Skarzenski and her husband Nick of Simpsonville, SC, Ryan Nuhfer and his wife Stephanie of Erie, Wesley Foote and Ashley of Augusta, GA, Brett Foote of Meadville, Rachel Voller of Tarentum, Kevin Voller of Pittsburgh; three step-grandchildren, Damon Mohl and wife Jessica of Crawfordsville, IN, Rachel Mohl Whiting and husband Todd of Monroe, NC, and Michael Mohl and wife Kristina of Bel Air, MD; 14 great grandchildren, Logan Copeland, Kyle Nuhfer, Luke and Maya Marshall, Jackie and Sydney Copeland, Raegan Nuhfer, Lillian and Graham Nuhfer, William, Hannah and Charlotte Nuhfer, Jude Foote, Tristan Skarzenski; and eight step-great grandchildren, Owen, Ella, Livia and Ava Whiting, and Klemen,Vera Mohl, Aden and Logan Bishop. Also surviving is a brother, Thomas Etzel and his wife Georgia of Lynchburg, VA; four sisters, Esther Staab and husband Tiny of Cranberry, Joanne Bell of Franklin, Betty Curtis of Ludington, MI, and Juanita Kaber and husband Dale of Shippenville; and a sister-in-law, Rochelle Etzel of Shippenville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Berlie Etzel, Jr.; and two sisters, Thelma Steele and Mary Morris.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Friday from 6 to 8 PM and on Saturday from 10 to 11 AM at which time the funeral service will be conducted with Pastor Sam Marchetta of Wesbury United Methodist Community officiating.
Interment will be in Kingsley Cemetery in Townville.
