Obituary of John W. Hummer
Mr. John W. Hummer, 92, formerly of Titusville, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Rouse Warren County Home in Youngsville.
He was born in Titusville on September 7, 1924, to the late George Marion and Arabelle Ida Rumbaugh Hummer. He was raised on the Muchinhope Registered Jerseys Dairy Farm in the Bethel community, north of Titusville.
John attended the first eight grades of school in the one room Hummer schoolhouse. He graduated from Colestock High School. After the service he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture under the GI Bill at Pennsylvania State (College) University, where he also obtained a Masters degree.
He was drafted into the United States Army during WWII. He served in the Third Army under General George Patton in France and Germany. He was in one of the first units to liberate the infamous Dachau concentration camp, and was honorably discharged near the end of the war.
After college John returned to the Muchinhope Farm as part owner and manager with his father. He later joined the teaching staff at Youngsville High School, where he taught many years as the vocational agriculture instructor.
John married Lois Brown on June 22, 1958 at Kerr Hill Presbyterian Church. She preceded him death on April 13, 1994. He later married Adeline Harvey, and she preceded him death on August 15, 2014.
He was associated with the Bethel United Methodist Church.
John is survived by three sons, Tim Hummer and wife Heather of Pittsfield, Jeff Hummer and wife Kathy of Franklin, and Kirk Hummer and wife Lisa of Grand Valley; six grandchildren, Brandon Hummer and wife Lauren, Ashley Hummer, Zachary, Victoria, and Joseph Hummer; and one great grandchild, Claire Sawyer; a sister, Patricia Geisendorfer of Titusville; a brother, Paul Hummer and wife Mary of Loveland, Co; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Hummer, and an infant daughter.
Friends and family may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville, on Tuesday, March 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 15, at 11 AM at the Bethel First United Methodist Church, 15068 PA-89, Titusville, PA 16354 with Pastor Jerry Gray officiating.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery.
