Obituary of Albert R. Zahner

Albert R. “Ab” Zahner, 90, of Titusville, passed away Saturday evening June 17, 2017.

            Ab was born at Britton Run, Sparta Twp., PA on May 23, 1927, a son of the late Albert and Margaret Haspel Zahner. 

            He married the love of his life, Alice Daniels, on March 16, 1957 at St. Paul’s Church in Titusville.  She preceded him in death on July 27, 2013.

            Ab was a graduate of Titusville High School, class of 1945.  He was a veteran having served in the US Army.  He served his country for two years as a medic during the Korean War and served one year overseas at Okinawa.

            Ab worked for Ray Armstrong Lumber Company for two years and ten years at Queen Cutlery.  He then was employed for 28 years at the Titusville Post Office from where he retired in 1986. 

            Ab was great at playing sports.  He played basketball for many years at Titusville High School and the Titusville YMCA.  He was also a good basketball referee for a number of years.  His top sport was baseball.  He played for two great semi pro teams, Maplelawn and Black Ash.  He also had a major league tryout with the NY Giants.  He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, and golfing with his wife, children, and grandchildren. 

            He was a member of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW.

            Ab is survived by two children, Gary Zahner and wife Karen of Titusville and Cheryl Taylor and husband Douglas of Union City; four grandchildren, Eric Zahner and wife Keri of North East, Tobi Xhaxho and husband Toni of Ripley, NY, Zane Taylor of College Station, TX, and Aaron Taylor of Union City; two great grandchildren, Joseph Zahner and Helena Xhaxho; and a brother, Raymond Zahner of Titusville.

            In addition to the love of his life, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin and Harry Zahner; and a sister-in-law, Anabel Zahner.

            No public calling hours will be observed.  A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

            The family asks that memorials be made to the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW 206 St. John Street Titusville, PA 16354 or to the charity of one’s choice.
