Obituary of Keith Mortimer
Mr. Keith D. Mortimer, 90, of 322 S. Martin Street, Titusville, died Monday morning March 28, 2011 at Southwoods Assisted Living Community in Titusville.
Mr. Mortimer was born on January 24, 1921 at Rimersburg, PA, a son of the late George and Lyda Cobbett Mortimer. He married Marilyn Kummer Snyder on January 2, 1995 at St. James Memorial Episcopal Church in Titusville, where he was a member. He was previously married to Bessie Shakley who preceded him in death.
Mr. Mortimer was a graduate of Union High School in Rimersburg, class of 1939. Upon completion of high school Mr. Mortimer worked with his father hauling freight. On January 3, 1942 he entered the US Army at New Kensington, PA and was honorably discharged on January 30, 1946 at Camp Atterbury, IN with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After the Army, Mr. Mortimer graduated from watchmaker’s school in Pittsburgh starting his lifelong love of watchmaking. He then took a job as a truck driver with the Archway Cookie Company in Rimersburg. He often shared his fond memories of delivering cookies throughout Pennsylvania. He then moved to Morgantown, WV where he learned the machinist trade from his Uncle Elmer Mortimer at North American Galis. After learning the trade, he was employed by Morgantown Machine and Hydraulics, retiring in 1982 after 16 years of service.
Mr. Mortimer enjoyed many hobbies including watch repair, collecting coins and coal mine script. He was also well known in the community for his talent with stained glass, making lamps, night lights and sun catchers and sharing them with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Titusville; two daughters, Britta Kiger of Morgantown, WV and Mary Kay Mortimer of Indiana, PA; a step-daughter, Debra Snyder Cagle and husband Tom of Saegertown, PA; three step-sons, Steven J. Snyder and Brett A. Snyder of South Carolina and John D. Snyder of Florida, three grandchildren, Brian Cagle, Jeffrey Cagle, and Alicia Cagle; a sister, Marilyn Bowser of Shippenville; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Bessie Shakley, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Mortimer, and son-in-law John Robert Kiger. The family will receive friends at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington Street, Titusville, PA on Saturday April 2, 2011 from 1:00 to 2:00 at which time a memorial service will be conducted with Fr. William French, pastor of St. James Memorial Episcopal Church officiating.
Interment will be at Lawnwood Cemetery in Morgantown at a later date.
