Obituary of Arthur L. Hicks
Mr. Arthur “Art” L. Hicks, 92, formerly of Spartansburg, passed away at 3:05 PM on Friday, May 18, 2018, at the Titusville Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Hicks was born on January 9, 1926, in Nacora, Nebraska to the late Gordon and Florence Spencer Hicks. He married Barbara Weidner on October 12, 1946, in Spartansburg. Mrs. Hicks preceded him in death on July 27, 2002.
He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. He was assigned to the 7th Army Air Force on March 14, 1944, at Ft. Meade, Maryland. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged from Ft. Dix, NJ on April 11, 1946, with the rank of Sargent.
Mr. Hicks was employed as a jeep driver for 46 years with Universal Cyclops Spec. Steel Corporation until his retirement in 1986.
He was a longtime member of the Rometown Community Church and was instrumental in the building of the new church on RT 89 and loved working the church suppers. He was also a former auxiliary policeman and a member of the Cyclops Quarter Century Club, lifetime member of the Cleo J. Ross Post 368 American Legion, lifetime member of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW, a member of the CB Radio Club, and Spartansburg Senior Center.
Arthur loved his tractors, snow plowing, brush hogging, riding his 4-wheeler, welding, putting together jigsaw puzzles, latch hook, woodworking, bowling and ceramics. Art especially loved spending time with his family and most especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Ames and husband Glenn of Pleasantville; 2 sons, Norman Hicks and wife Susan of Spartansburg, James Hicks and wife Chris of Titusville; 7 grandchildren, Richard Grove who was his caregiver for 5 years of Oil City, Charli Brunst and husband Dan of Spartansburg, Amanda Phelps of Erie, Brian Hicks of Sligo, Kevin Hicks of Titusville, Shannan Hicks of Spartansburg, John Hicks of Spartansburg; 8 great grandchildren, Katie, Chrissy, Cody and Kaleb Brunst, Cameron Phelps, Guster Hicks, Hunter Hicks, Neville Hicks; and 4 great-great grandchildren, Eliott, Amara, Marty, and Little John.
Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Raymond and Harlan Hicks; and 3 sisters, Gladys Wagner, Pauline McCalmont and Dorothy McCrillis.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St., Titusville, PA 16354 on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Additional viewing will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM with the service to follow conducted by his nephew-in-law, Pal Stevens.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery with full military rites.
