Obituary of Carl M. Spence
Carl M. Spence, 91, of Pleasantville, passed away Monday morning August 13, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.
Carl was born on February 26, 1927 in Titusville, a son of the late Oliver and Anna Mae Mook Spence. He was married to Mary Nichols on Aug. 17, 1949 in Pleasantville.
Carl had attended the Pleasantville School.
He was a veteran having served in the US Army during World War II. He entered the service on May 31, 1945 at Pittsburgh and was honorably discharged on Dec. 23, 1946 at Ft. Dix, NJ.
Carl had been employed as plant mechanic at the former Continental Can Company in Oil City for 35 years from where he retired.
Carl was a member of the Pleasantville First Presbyterian Church and a member of the former Pleasantville Odd Fellows. He was a collector of oil and gas memorabilia and antiques. He also enjoyed car restoration and yard sales.
Carl enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren; hunting in his earlier years; and sitting on the porch of their Canadohta Lake cottage.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Pleasantville; four children, Randall Spence and wife Jill of Titusville, Carolyn Fair and husband Jim of Oil City, Julie Safin and husband Frank of Quinton,NJ, and Catherine Kirk and husband Duane of Blooming Valley; the following grandchildren, Kerrie Phetteplace and husband John of Knoxville, TN, Elizabeth Sater and husband Jason of Boulder, CO, John Carl Wyant and wife Katie of Pittsburgh, Brynna Manuel and husband Tyler of Oil City, Katie Chastain and husband Andrew of Pennsville, NJ, Michael Safin of New Jersey, Mark Kirk and wife Christen of Laramie, WY, Scott Kirk of Telluride, CO, and Laura Kirk and companion Thomas of Indiana, PA; six great grandchildren, Keegan Phetteplace, Ellienna and Charlotte Manuel, Evan, Owen and Amy Kirk; a sister, Helen Wolf and husband David of Albany, NY; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Bevier of Neilltown and Anna Spence of Pleasantville; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Robert Spence; and a sister, Martha Cordell.
Friends may call at the Hennes-Garrett Funeral Home 203 E. Main St. Titusville, PA on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM and attend the funeral service there on Friday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jamie Fowler of the Pleasantville First Presbyterian Church officiating.
Interment will be in Sanford Cemetery with full military rites.
