Obituary of Floyd E. Beers

Mr. Floyd E. Beers, 91, died at 1:40 PM on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Southwoods Assisted Living Community. He was a former resident of 1937 Meadville Rd. in Titusville. Mr. Beers was born on April 11, 1920 in Southwest Twp., Warren Co. to the late Linford and Clara Wheelock Beers. He attended Goodwill Hills Elementary School and graduated from Pleasantville High School where he walked 14 miles round trip every day. In February 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army at New Cumberland, PA. He served in the Signal Corps and saw service in North Africa, Sicily, Sardinia and Italy during World War II. He returned home and was employed by Northern Ordinance and Grand Valley Manufacturing, and retired from Quaker State in 1985 after working for 27 years as a lease worker. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, golfing and bowling. Mr. Beers is survived by his daughter, Marlene Haas Oviatt Sparrow and her husband Michael J. of Carlisle, PA; a brother, William Beers of Titusville; two sisters, Betty Beers of Longwood, FL, Lela Sullivan of Hydetown; five grandchildren, Shannon Oviatt Sparrow Philipp of New Baltimore, MI, B.J. Sparrow of Beaver Falls, Mark Patten of Scenery Hill, Eric Patten of N. Royalton, OH, Rob Sparrow of Mill Hall. He was preceded in death by his first wife Julia Proper Beers in 1985, his second wife, Hazel Strawbridge Wright Beers in 2006; a daughter, Karen Haas Patnychuk in 2008; and two brothers, Charles Beers and Guy Beers. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home today (Friday) from 12:00 to 2:00 PM with the service to follow conducted by Mrs. Jacqueline Wagner. Interment will be in Jamison Corners Cemetery with full military rites. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Crawford Co. 310 N. Monroe St., Titusville, PA 16354 or to the American Cancer Society 320 Bilmar Dr., Pittsburgh, Pa 15205.
