Obituary of Charles R. Huston
Mr. Charles R. Huston, 86, of 15107 Bethel Church Rd. Titusville, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at his residence.
Mr. Huston was born on June 25, 1925 at Eldred, PA, a son of the late James M. and Donna McDowell Huston. He was married to Shirley Beers on Dec. 31, 1946 at Grand Valley, PA.
Mr. Huston was a graduate of the Pleasantville High School. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Navy. He entered the service in January of 1943 and served aboard the USS Arthur Middleton. He operated a landing barge to transport troops. He landed troops in the Philippines for the invasion of the island Leyte and later the main island of Luzan. He was also present for the battle at Okinawa in April of 1945. He spent 19 months in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in May of 1946 and received the following medals; American Area, Asiatic-Pacific with 3 stars, Philippine Liberation with 2 stars, WWII Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Huston worked locally in the oil fields, drilling wells for Northern Ordinance. He later worked for Wolfe’s Head Refinery, as well as various machine shops as a machinist, retiring from Grand Valley Manufacturing. He was custodian and maintenance for the Titusville Wesleyan Methodist Church and Academy for over 40 years.
Mr. Huston was a member of the Titusville Wesleyan Methodist Church where he served as trustee, head usher, treasurer, advisory board member, and Wesleyan Methodist Academy school board member.
He was a friend to everyone and was always helping those in need.
He is survived by his wife Shirley of 64 years; his children, Linda Huston Stroup and her husband Jerry of Titusville, and Charles J. Huston and his wife Charlotte of Titusville; his grandchildren, Charles E. Huston and his wife Audrey of Spearfish, SD, Travis Huston and his wife April of Dayton, PA, Damon Huston of Edinboro, Jamie Stroup of Titusville, and Jenny Stroup Tucker and husband Ricky of Titusville; his great grandchildren, Hunter, Garet and Mackenzie Huston, Caitlin, Lilly, Allsion, and Ricky Joe Tucker; a brother, William Huston and wife Janice of Shelton, WA; a brother-in-law, William Swick of Dunnellon, FL; a sister-in-law, Oleta Huston of El Dorado, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Huston and Dorothy Swick; and a brother, Ralph Huston.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home today (Tuesday) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be conducted at the Titusville Wesleyan Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Daniel Hardy, pastor, and Rev. Sheridan Rainey, retired minister, officiating.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery.
