To the family of Gerry Please accept my sincere condolences at the loss of your wonderful mother and grandmother.
At Drake Well after an evening sing-along several years ago, Gerry approached us to ask if an auto harpist could join the Elm Street Strummers. That was the beginning of many happy years of playing together. Gerry's beautiful chords and voice added an angelic quality, a fullness that covered any discordant note. Occasionally, the Strummers met at her house for practice, and she was willing and ready for performances near and far -- the Drake Well Circus, the county fair, a local church, the Erie library.
What a pleasure, and yes, a blessing, to know this wonderful, thoughtful woman, as well as meeting members of her family. I personally will remember how Gerry was willing to help proof handouts, check song sheets for the next sing-along. During a performance, as we each took turns speaking for a moment, she would tell her story of why she learned to play the auto harp. Originally, she played the piano with her elementary school children. But sometimes that meant her back was to the kids. At the suggestion of her sister, she took up the autoharp so that she could keep an eye on her children. Her story always amused us and the audience.
We Strummers will miss Gerry's presence so very much. Her lovely chords will remain in rehearsals and performances as we sing Simple Gifts or other favorites.
