Obituary of Harold C. Schreckengost
Mr. Harold Clair Schreckengost, 96, of 233 Parallel St., Pleasantville died at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 03, 2012 at the Golden LivingCenter in Titusville. He had been a patient there for the past two months.
Mr. Schreckengost was born on October 7, 1915 in Oil Creek Twp., Crawford County to the late Clair J. and Rosie E. Kitlinger Schreckengost.
He was a graduate of Titusville High School class of 1936, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Edinboro Teachers College in 1941.
Mr. Schreckengost was a veteran of World War II. He entered the service on January 11, 1944 and served with Company āEā 23rd Infantry Regiment. On February 26, 1945 he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for gallantry in action on January 16, 1945, at the battle for Ondenval-Bullingen Pass, Germany. He was awarded the EAME Service Medal, Combat & Infantry Badge, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Allied Colors Ribbon, and wears 4 bronze stars for Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 4, 1945 with the rank of Private First Class.
Harold was formerly employed as a machine operator at General Electric in Erie, then from 1949 to 1956 he was a barber in Erie and went on to own and operated Wholesale Foods from 1957 to 1962. He finished his working career in 1977, with 14 years as the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville.
He was a member of the Cleo J. Ross Post 368 American Legion and of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW.
Mr. Schreckengost is survived by a niece, Karen Crisman and husband Richard of Titusville; and neighbors and close friends which include Chuck and Audrey August, and Kevin August.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Fritts.
No calling hours will be observed.
A memorial service will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
Interment will be in Brookville Cemetery.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the VFW Scholarship Fund in memory of Harold Schreckengost.
