Obituary of Oakley L. Hopkins
Oakley L. Hopkins, 95, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at Country Acres Personal Care Home in Titusville where he had been a resident for the past several months.
Mr. Hopkins was born on September 5, 1917 at Tidioute, PA, a son of the late Samuel and Effie Anne McDowell Hopkins. He was married to Alverda “Birdie” Minick on July 10, 1940 at Conneaut, OH. She preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 2011.
Mr. Hopkins had been employed as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Titusville for 33 years until his retirement in January of 1976. He was recently presented an award for his years of service with the Titusville Post Office.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Air Force. He entered the service on October 1, 1942 at Erie, PA and was honorably discharged on Sept. 9, 1943 at Sheppard Field, TX.
Mr. Hopkins was a former member of the Queen City Lodge No. 304 I.O.O.F. where he was past officer of all positions of the lodge. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, hiking, and playing his guitar.
Mr. Hopkins is survived by two sons, Oakley L. “Bud” Hopkins, Jr. and wife Brenda of Currie, NC, and Clemons Edward Hopkins of Hydetown; a son-in-law, John Syphrit and fiancée Carol Shaw of Titusville; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Syphrit; four brothers, Raymond, Phillip, Wellington, and Samuel Hopkins; and three sisters, Marie Bush, Nanna Brown, and Rachel Sutton.
No public calling hours or funeral service will be observed.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family asks that memorials be made to the Crawford County Humane Society or to Country Acres Personal Care Home.
