Obituary of Garold L. Shaffer

Garold L. Shaffer, 66, of 1341 Cherrytree Rd. Titusville, died Friday morning December 14, 2012 at his residence following an extended illness. Garold was born on Aug. 31, 1946 at Titusville, PA, a son of Doris Moore Shaffer and the late Own R. Shaffer, Sr. He was married to Sue Bankes on Aug. 31, 1968 at Corry, PA. Garold was a graduate of the Titusville High School, class of 1964 and also a graduate of lumber grading school at Memphis, TN where he graduated as valedictorian. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict having served in the US Army. He entered the service on Nov. 22, 1965 at Pittsburgh, PA. He served with the 243rd Field Service Company, First Logistical Command as a mortuary specialist at Da Nang. He was honorably discharged to the Army Reserves on Nov. 13, 1967 at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Garold had worked as a surveyor for PennDOT for a brief time following his graduation. He operated Shaffer Lumber Co. with his father for a number of years, as well as operating a small dairy farm. He learned masonary skills and was proud to have stoned and stuccoed his home on Cherrytree Road. Garold was a member of the McDaniel’s Corners Bible Church; a member of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW; and a member of the Fly Fishers Organization. He enjoyed hunting, fly fishing and the outdoors. He was a Jack of all trades. Garold is survived by his mother of Titusville; his wife of Titusville; three children, Tiffanne Cowan and husband John of Hudson, OH, Camille Nairn and husband Jason of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Justin Shaffer and wife Jamie of Galeton, PA; five grandchildren, Owen, Grace and Ellen Nairn, Caroline and Asher Shaffer; two brothers, Owen R. “Dick” Shaffer, Jr. and wife Donna of Titusville and L. Craig Shaffer and wife Carla of Erie; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald Bankes. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM and attend the funeral service on Tuesday at the Breedtown Baptist Church with Rev. Adam Almaroad, pastor of the McDaniel’s Corners Bible Church, and Rev. Clyde Ball, retired minister, officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by officers and members of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW. Interment will be in Jamison Corners Cemetery.
