Obituary of John P. Beal
Mr. John P. “Jack” Beal, Jr., 94, of Tucson, Arizona and formerly of Titusville, PA, died on Sunday, February 24th at the Tucson Medical Center Campus.
Born on April 2, 1918 in Nutley, New Jersey, Jack was the son of John P. and Martha Bovard Beal. He was married to Martha McNierney on February 9, 1945 at St. Titus Church in Titusville. She preceded him in death on December 6, 2003.
Jack earned a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University and spent most of his working career as the plant manager of the former Universal Cyclops Specialty Steel Corporation in Titusville. After his retirement, he served as a consultant to the company.
Jack was a veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.
He was a member of St. Titus Church in Titusville and St. Thomas the Apostle in Tucson. A longtime Rotarian and a tireless volunteer, he served on the boards of banks and hospitals and, during the past decade, volunteered several days a week at the Tucson Medical Center. An exemplar of the Rotary motto “service before self,” Jack was the recipient of many awards for his civic service, including “Citizen of the Year” in Titusville, PA. Most recently he was a recipient of the 2012 Erickson Legacy Award for his selfless contributions of time and talent to the TMC Foundation. The countless people and organizations who came in contact with Jack were greatly benefited by his kindness, his friendship, and his spirit of volunteerism.
He is survived by the following: his sister, Anne Vickers and husband Charles of Stamford, Connecticut; his children, Rev. John Beal of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Anderson and husband Patrick of South Sutton, New Hampshire, Martha Ratliff and husband Tracy of Tucson, Arizona, and Christopher Beal and wife Kindall of Bourne, Texas; five grandchildren: Jason and Christian
Anderson, Katharine Anderson and husband Kent Forde, and Hannah and Noah Ratliff, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Alex Beal.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville, PA on Friday, March 1st from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 2nd at St. Titus Church with Fr. John Beal and Fr. Walter E. Packard as celebrants.
Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Titusville.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Tucson Medical Center, the American Heart Association, or the American Diabetes Foundation.
