Obituary of Robert E. Hummel

Mr. Robert E. Hummel, 88, of 41051 Park Ave., (Hydetown) Titusville died at 8:30 AM on Friday, April 12, 2013, at his residence. Mr. Hummel was born on August 25, 1924, in Titusville to the late J. Henry and Pearl E. Tucker Hummel. He married Ellen M. Fenton on August 4, 1951, in Titusville. Mrs. Hummel preceded him in death on November 15, 2000. He attended St. Joseph’s Academy and Titusville High School. Mr. Hummel was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He entered the service on May 25, 1943 at Erie and was assigned to the 307th Airborne Engineers Battalion 82nd Airborne Division where he was a truck driver. Battles and campaigns included the Go 33 & 40 WD 45, Normandy, Rhineland, Ardenes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead. He was honorably discharged from Indiantown Gap Military Reserve on November 10, 1945, with the rank of Private First Class. He returned home following the service and was employed as a heater with Universal Cyclops Specialty Steel Corporation from 1951 until his retirement in 1987. Prior to and while working at Cyclops he was also employed as a truck driver and electrician. Mr. Hummel attended Hydetown Baptist Church. He was a member of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW, Cleo J. Ross Post 368 American Legion, Cyclops Quarter Century Club, NRA, and Civil Air Patrol. Robert enjoyed doing many things. At the age of 16 he became a pilot before he could drive. He loved hunting, bowling, roller skating, reading (especially on WWII), helping family and friends, traveling, going to tractor pulls, and watching, NASCAR and the old cartoons. Many would say he was a jokester with a good sense of humor and a distinct laugh. Not only was he a jack of all trades but a master as well. He was especially fond of spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and Patches his dog. He is survived by three children, Robert E. Hummel and wife Lisa, Joella Sue Hummel, Cheryl Lynn Hummel all of Hydetown; 4 grandchildren, Chief Warrant Officer Taryn Dinsmore and husband Kurt stationed with the US Army in Colorado Springs, Co, Tina Schooley of Chandler, AZ, Kirsty Sligar and husband Kris of Ft. Worth, TX, Jaymie Hummel of Titusville; 7 great-grandchildren, Kamdyn and Owen Dinsmore, Arlayna Schooley, Kaidyn and Paityn Lutostanski, Taylor and James Sligar; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Hummel was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Krystyn Nykole Hummel; a brother, Richard Hummel; and a sister who died in infancy. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home today (Monday) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM and attend the funeral service from the funeral home on Tuesday at 11:00 AM with his brother-in-law: Dr. Roger Fenton and Gordon Turk, officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
