Obituary of Nellie V. Savage
Mrs. Nellie V. Savage, 97, of Deltona, FL, formerly of Titusville, passed away Thursday morning December 12, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, VA.
Nellie was born on September 17, 1916 at Union City, PA, a daughter of the late John and Alida Lindblad Magnuson. She was married to Dr. William C.G. Savage on June 27, 1942. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1987.
Nellie was a graduate of Union City High School, class of 1934, and a graduate of Edinboro University, class of 1940, earning her bachelor’s degree in Education. She was employed for seven years as a teacher with the Union City School District. Following her marriage, she and her husband opened the Titusville Veterinary Clinic in 1943, and operated the business until their retirements in 1982, at which time they moved from Titusville to Florida.
Nellie was well known in the Titusville community for her service work. She was an active member in the Titusville First Presbyterian Church. She served in leadership roles in the Titusville Service League and was President of the Titusville Women’s Club. When her children were young, she was a leader in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1967 she was host mother for Renaldo Rasquin, an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student from Venezuela. Later she was host parent for Christina Ribeiro, a Rotary exchange student from Brazil. Nellie was President of the AFS chapter in Titusville and remained active in that organization for many years. She stayed connected with a number of former AFS and Rotary students, and visited some of them in Thailand, Brazil, Chile, and England. She was proud of her world-wide traveling, which spanned five continents.
Nellie is survived by three children, Christine Bingham and husband Robert of Richmond, VA, John Savage and wife Karen of Bozeman, MT, and Dr. George Savage and wife Donna of Madison, WI; a daughter-in-law, Midori Savage of Farmington Hills, MI; eleven grandchildren: Scott Savage of Stanley, ID, Megan Hart of Hinsdale, IL, James Savage of Niceville, FL, Jennifer Torretti of State College, PA, Nancy Kasik of Roswell, GA, Matthew Bingham of San Francisco, CA, Melissa Bingham of Richmond, VA, Kelly Savage of Brooklyn, NY, Anna Park of Washington, DC, Jessica Adelman of Chicago, IL, and Allison Adelman of Santa Barbara, CA; ten great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Ruth Magnuson of Greensburg, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Col. William Savage, Jr. as well as four brothers and a sister.
No public calling hours will be observed. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Titusville First Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice.
