Obituary of George M. Stewart
George M. Stewart, 85, of 18028 Stewart Road Centerville, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie.
George was born on June 22, 1928 at the family homestead on Stewart Road, the son of the late Robert Earl and Jennie McClintock Stewart. He was married to Joyce Carr on June 19, 1954.
George was a graduate of Colestock High School, class of 1946. He had always worked the family farm as well as holding numerous jobs in the area including working in forestry; was employed at Quaker State as a ‘roust-a-bout’ for 15 years; and also worked for Morrison Construction Company.
In his spare time, George could be found riding his ‘56 Ford tractor doing local brushhogging jobs for many folks. In recent years, he enjoyed his monthly luncheon meetings with several of his classmates.
George was an associate member of the Rometown Community Church and a former member of the former Vroman Presbyterian Church. He was a longtime member of the Hydetown Grange where he held several office positions. George was also caretaker of Covenanter Cemetery for many years.
George is survived by his wife Joyce of 59 years; six children, Curtis Stewart and wife Jane of Madison, OH, Christopher Stewart of Titusville, Scott Stewart and wife Dina of Corry, Valerie Crabb and husband Mark of Blooming Valley, Celeste Logsdon and husband Jeff of Centerville, and Nicole Stewart of Titusville; 14 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; three sisters, Marian Hasbrouck of Titusville, Mildred Ray of Meadville, and Beatrice Fahnestock and husband Bill of Virginia; a brother, Robert Stewart and wife Shirley of Pleasantville; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick Stewart, and two sisters, Kathryn Hofius and Margaret Lokar.
Friends may call at the Rometown Community Church 44364 Harrison Rd. Spartansburg today (Friday) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Further visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 11 AM to noon at which time the funeral service will be conducted with Pastor Timothy Harger, officiating.
Interment will be in Covenanter Cemetery.
