Obituary of John R. Chambers

John R. “Bob” Chambers, 93, of 115 Eldred Center Rd. Grand Valley, passed away Wednesday morning April 9, 2014 at Warren General Hospital in Warren, PA. Bob was born on April 17, 1920 in Titusville, a son of the late Floyd and Irene Haehn Chambers. He was married to Edith “Josie” Elder on June 28, 1941. She preceded him in death on May 20, 1998. He later married Helen Nobles Haehn in 1999. She preceded him in death in October of 2012. Bob was a graduate of Colestock High School in Titusville. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He entered the service on Dec. 28, 1943 at Erie, PA. He served with Company A 329th Infantry at Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and Ardennes. He was awarded the Purple Heart on July 29, 1944 from wounds received at Belgium and in Northern France. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 20, 1945 at Fort Myer, VA. Bob had owned and operated Home Supply Company in Grand Valley from 1946 until 1964. He was also employed as a machinist at Grand Valley Manufacturing during that time. He later owned a machine shop with Dillon Vroman for several years in Grand Valley, where the fire department now stands. He was last employed as a rural postal carrier for 30 years until his retirement. Bob had attended the Grand Valley United Methodist Church. He was one of the founding members of the Grand Valley Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Titusville Lodge No. 264 B.P.O. Elks; a member of the Titusville Lodge No. 754 F&AM; a member of the Oil City Lodge of Perfection; a member of the Colonel Drake Shrine Club; a member of Warren County, Corry, and Union City Shrine Clubs; and a life member of both the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW and Cleo J. Ross Post No. 368 American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and his fishing trips to Canada; enjoyed bowling; and enjoyed wintering in Florida. Bob is survived by two daughters, Susan Gregory and husband John, and Beth Haehn and husband Timothy, all of Grand Valley; a step-son, Donald Haehn and wife Hilda of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Lisa Thompson of Grand Valley, Tiffany Anderson and husband Bob of Warren, Britta Haehn and companion Chance Robishaw of Grand Valley; two great grandchildren, Ty Hillard and fiancée Abby Berlin, and Michael Hillard and wife Aimee; three great great grandchildren, John and Ryan Hillard, and Kylie Hillard; several step-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Zinger of Warren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville today (Thursday) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM and attend the funeral service there on Friday at 11 AM with Rev. Ralph Culp, pastor of the Grand Valley United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Maultby Cemetery at Grand Valley. The family asks that memorials be made to the Grand Valley Volunteer Fire Dept. or to the Grand Valley United Methodist Church. FLOWERS
