Obituary of Benjamin D. McMahan
Benjamin D. “Ben” McMahan, 93, of 2385 Meadville Rd. Titusville, died Friday morning September 24, 2010 at the Titusville Area Hospital.
Mr. McMahan was born on April 1, 1917 in Franklin, a son of the late Benjamin and Minnie Stucke McMahan. He was married to Mary Osten on Sept. 27, 1947 in Titusville. She preceded him in death on July 11, 2002.
Ben had attended school at the former Gresham school near Titusville and later attended his junior year at Franklin. He graduated from Colestock High School, class of 1934. He also earned a college degree following his military service.
Ben was a veteran of World War II having served with the US Air Force as a Ball Turet Gunner. He entered the service in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of corporal.
He had been employed at the former Struthers Wells Corp. as a foreman until it’s closing, then became employed at Ernst Steel from where he retired in 1980.
Ben enjoyed watching NASCAR, NFL football, watching birds, spending time with his family, and taking country rides with his wife.
He is survived by a son-in-law, Robert Schrock of Erie; two granddaughters; 6 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandy Schrock and several brothers and sisters.
No public calling hours will be observed. A private funeral service will be conducted for the family on Monday at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home.
The family asks that memorials be made to any local hospice or to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation 130 W. 8th Street Suite 216 Erie, PA 16501.
