Obituary of Weldon D. Nelson

Mr. Weldon D. Nelson, 93, a resident of Southwoods Assisted Living Community in Titusville, formerly of Buxton Rd. Titusville, died at 7:15 AM Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Titusville Area Hospital. Mr. Nelson was born on Oct. 26, 1916 at Cooperstown, a son of the late Carl and Bertha Williams Nelson. He was married to Joanne Stone on June 24, 1938 in Franklin. She preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 2002. He was a graduate of the Cooperstown and Franklin High Schools and of the Franklin Commercial College. Mr. Nelson was a veteran of World War II having served with the US Army Air Force stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base at Wichita Falls, Texas. He retired in 1977 after 31 years of service with the US Postal Service in Titusville, the last 19 years as a carrier in Cherrytree Township area. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Breedtown Baptist Church. He was past president of the Cherrytree Township Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and past president of the Venango-Crawford County District. Mr. Nelson was a past master of the Sugarcreek and Cherrytree Granges; past master of the Venango County Pomona Grange; and member of the PA State Grange and National Grange. He was a charter member and first president of the Venango County Demeter Club. He was recently honored as an 80 year member of the PA State Grange. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Elder Statesmen Golf League; a member of the Dempseytown Senior Center; enjoyed gardening, visiting with family and friends, traveling and bowling. He enjoyed wintering in Florida with his wife for a number of years. He is survived by two sons, Robert D. Nelson and wife Becky and Norman L. Nelson and wife Marge, all of Titusville; two daughters, Nancy Williams and husband Kenneth of St. Clairsville, OH, and Linda Frost and husband Blaine of Titusville; 16 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marge Phillips of Glen Rose, TX. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a great grandson, Nate Zdarko; his step mother, Olive Montgomery Nelson; a brother Ellis Nelson; three sisters, Lela Nelson, Velma King and Eleanor Deets. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM and attend the funeral service on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Breedtown Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Kinnear officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens, Cranberry, Venango Co. The family asks that memorials be made to the Breedtown Baptist Church or to the charity of one’s choice. FLOWERS
