Obituary of James K. Hummer
James K. Hummer, 88, of Williamsport, PA, passed away Friday afternoon July 18, 2014 at the Williamsport Regional Medical Center.
Jim was born on June 13, 1926 in Titusville, a son of the late George and Arabelle Rumbaugh Hummer.
He was a graduate of Colestock High School, class of 1943 and attended Middlebury College in Vermont. He then served in the US Navy during World War II. Following his discharge from the service, he attended Tufts College in Boston where he received his B.S. degree. He then attended the University of North Carolina where he earned his Ph.D.
He performed cancer research in London, England and Sydney, Australia. He was employed as Professor of Chemistry at Wooster College in Ohio and at Lycoming College in Williamsport from where he retired. He was a visiting Professor at Bucknell University.
Jim enjoyed traveling and had visited Iceland, Antarctica, Great Britain, Siberia, New Zealand, and Scandinavia.
Jim is survived by two brothers, John W. Hummer and wife Adeline of Youngsville, and Paul D. Hummer and wife Mary of Titusville; a sister, Patricia “Pat” Geisendorfer of Titusville; numerous nieces and nephews; and his best friend and neighbor, Eric Burmeister of Williamsport.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery in Titusville.
