Obituary of James L. Vandervort

Mr. James L. “Jim” Vandervort, 69, of 430 Troy Center Road, in Titusville died at 5:42 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, at Titusville Area Hospital. Mr. Vandervort was born on Oct. 3, 1941, in Brookville, to the late William H. and Rhoda W. Vandervort. He married Lucy Himes on May 15, 1965, in Ringgold. He was a graduate of Brookville High School, Class of 1960. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy on June 15, 1960, and served aboard the USS Scamp until his honorable discharge on March 30, 1964. Mr. Vandervort was formerly employed as an electrician at Cyclops Specialty Steel Corp. in Titusville for 32 years. He retired in 1996. He then went to work for Universal Stainless Alloy Products for several years until his retirement in 2006, but he continued on as a consultant up until the time of his death. He was a member of Diamond Evangelical United Methodist Church, where he also sang in the church choir. He belonged to AARP, Cleo J. Ross Post 368 American Legion, and the Cytemp Quarter Century Club. Mr. Vandervort enjoyed woodworking, being outdoors, hunting, camping, golfing and traveling. He was most especially fond of spending time with his wife, his daughters and their husbands and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Vandervort, of Titusville; three daughters, Pam Spoharski and her husband, L. Steven Jr., Debbie Seeley and her husband, James, all of Titusville, Tracey Sansom and her husband, Steven, of Centerville; eight grandchildren, Stanley and Michael Spoharski, Brooke, Nathan and Tanner Seeley, Abby, Lea and Faith Sansom; two brothers, Ronald Vandervort and wife, Sandy, of Brookville, and Robert Vandervort and wife, Judy, of Reynoldsville; a sister, Joan Lockwood, of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., in, Titusville, on Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Further visitation will take place at Diamond Evangelical United Methodist Church on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m., with the service to follow conducted by the Rev. Gerald Miller and the Rev. Stephen Tiffany. Interment will be in Diamond Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Diamond E.U.M.
