Obituary of James E. Mealy

James E. Mealy, 65, of 13632 Bedbug Road Titusville, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning December 11, 2014 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca. Jim was born on May 11, 1949 in Titusville, a son of Janet Gilson Mealy McCarty and the late Arthur Mealy. He was married to Patricia Proper on June 9, 1973 in Franklin. Jim was a graduate of Titusville High School, class of 1968. He had been employed as a furnace operator at Universal Stainless and Alloy Products in Titusville from where he retired. He had also been employed previously at Cyclops Specialty Steel Corp. in Titusville and Viking Plastics in Corry. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict having served in the US Army as a medic. He entered the service on Feb. 25, 1969 in Pittsburgh. He was honorably discharged to Army Reserves on Nov. 21, 1970 at Oakland, CA. Jim was a member of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW in Titusville. He had been a volunteer and past Assistant Chief of the Hydetown Volunteer Fire Dept. and was also a part of the founding of the fire department. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, camping, canoeing, hiking, fishing, woodworking, and traveling. He was an avid reader, especially of history. Jim is survived by his wife of Titusville; his mother of Saegertown; a son, Michael Mealy and wife Monica Ramos of Copenhagen, Denmark; a brother, Ronald Mealy and wife Kimberly of Leland, NC; a brother-in-law, Paul Proper of Franklin; sisters-in-law, Sue Ditzenberger and husband Ted of Seneca, and Mary Heckathorn of Franklin; two nephews, Joshua D. Ditzenberger of Rocky Grove and Ryan Carson and wife Kristalyn of York; three nieces, Melissa Rehberg and husband Nick of Seneca, Christen Campbell and husband Bill of Clarion, and Brianne Race and husband Jeremy of Leland, NC; three great nieces and one great nephew; and numerous cousins. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lisa Ann Mealy; an infant sister, Eleanor Mealy; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Oren and Betty Proper. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Monday from 6 to 8 PM and attend the funeral service there on Tuesday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Timothy Maybray of the Titusville Free Methodist Church, officiating.
