Obituary of George T. Rogan

George Thomas Rogan, 85 of 319 N. Washington Street, Titusville, PA formerly of Cumberland, MD, passed away on January 3, 2015 at his residence surrounded by family. George was born on June 29, 1929 in Cumberland, MD, a son of the late Lee and Matilda Dorn Rogan. George was a graduate of LaSalle High School, class of 1947. He was a member of St. Titus Catholic Church, Titusville and a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cumberland. As a young boy George worked for Cumberland Heights Grocery Store “Browns” as a clerk, stock boy, and delivery person. From there he worked as a serviceman at the Canteen Vending Company. He then joined the B&O Railroad as a machinist apprentice and worked there for several years but interrupted from 1949-1954 by military service in the US Air Force. He was honorably discharge in November 1954. He then worked at the Celanese Fiber Company for 27 years as a machine shop supervisor and when the plant closed he moved to Annapolis, MD and became the machine shop supervisor at the US Naval Academy. He stayed in their employment until he retired in 1999 at the age of 70. George was a member of the American Legion Post 368 of Titusville. He enjoyed swimming, softball, reading Louis L’Amour books, Westerns, puzzles and Word Search books. He was an avid fan of all sports but really enjoyed football and loved the Washington Redskins. George is survived by one son, Gary Rogan and fiancée, Helen Lyons of Celebration, FL, two daughters, Susan Thomas and husband Julian of Cumberland, Karen Gale and husband John of Titusville, PA. He is also survived by two sisters, Rosella Grove and husband Harold of Cumberland and Angela Troutman of Cumberland, 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Nancy in March 2012, one sister, Martha Rogan, one granddaughter, Julie Thomas, one grandson, Thomas Short, one brother-in-law, Kenneth Troutman and one great-nephew, Jeffrey Harbel. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to everyone at Hospice of Crawford County, PA and Dr. Brian Los for their compassion, love and support during this time. Friends may call at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD on Friday from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM and attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 1:00 PM at St. Mary’s Church in Cumberland, MD. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Cumberland, MD. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in George’s memory to Hospice of Crawford County 302 West Oak Street, Titusville, PA 16354 or to any of his favorite charities, Lung Cancer Assoc., American Heart Assoc., Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Lupus Foundation, Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation, Alzheimer’s/Dementia Foundation, Children’s Hospital.
