Obituary of Bernard C. Speth

Bernard C. Speth, 90, of Rocky Grove, went to be with the Lord Monday, January 19, 2015 at his home. He was born September 11, 1924, in Grand Valley, PA, the only child of Edward and Frances Cardullo Speth. He was married April 29, 1950, to Gwen Doutt. She passed away in 2012. He is survived by a son David Speth and his wife Barb of Columbia S.C.; a daughter Nancy Speth of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a son Jim Speth and his wife Sarah of Rocky Grove. Also surviving is a grandson Matthew Speth and his wife Apple of Denver, CO; a step-grandson Eli Moreland and step-granddaughter Carly Moreland both of Rocky Grove. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Sally Doutt Robinson of Burleson, TX; and several cousins. He graduated in 1942 from Titusville High School. While in school he worked part time in a grocery store and also at home on the family farm. After graduation he went to work full time in a grocery store in Franklin, PA. He was drafted during World War II, serving in the US Army from 1943-1945, as a radio cryptographer with the Merrill’s Marauders Unit in China, Burma and India. Upon his discharge from the service he came back to Franklin and along with his wife opened up his own grocery store, called Speth’s Market, on Liberty Street. In 1953 he sold the store and moved to Fort Worth, TX where he worked at CPT as a drill bit operator. He returned to PA in 1967 and worked at JOY Global as a computer programmer until retiring in 1986. He also did some farming as a side hobby. He enjoyed watching old movies, especially war movies, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of Rocky Grove Presbyterian Church and the Franklin VFW. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville, PA on Friday from 10:00 AM until noon at which time the funeral service will be conducted with Rev. Sue Nageotte, pastor of the Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Vroman Excelsior Cemetery. The family asks that memorials be made to the Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church 321 Rocky Grove Ave. Franklin, PA 16323 or to the VFW Post No. 1835 411 9th Street Franklin, PA 16323.
