Obituary of James A. Nystrom

Mr. James A. Nystrom, 70, of 507 Bank St., Titusville passed away unexpectedly at 12:59 AM, Saturday, January 24, 2015, at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie. Jim was born on June 28, 1944, in Murrysville, Pennsylvania to the late Rune E. and Ella Talent Nystrom. He married his college sweetheart, Rose Eileen Curry on June 30, 1966, in Winchester, KS. Jim graduated from Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvania and Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas where he played collegiate football and baseball. He served in the United States Army, First Armored Division, at Fort Hood, Texas, from 1966 to 1968. Over his 50 year career, Jim held numerous finance, accounting, and business positions as well as being a practicing Certified Public Accountant since 1983. For the past 36 years, he has enjoyed working with and being part of the Titusville business community. He was the President and an owner of Northwest Accounting Services. He served as administrator for the Titusville Area Hospital, long standing board member for the Titusville Dairy, and member of the local Northwest Savings Bank Advisory Committee. He was a past President of the Titusville Area School Board, a member of the Titusville City Council and former Mayor of Titusville. Jim also served as a board member with the Redevelopment Authority, a past President for the regional Pennsylvania CPIA, a board member for the Crawford County Solid Waste Authority, as well as holding positions with several other local and county organizations. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. Jim was instrumental in the formation of the Titusville Youth Football program and served as the inaugural coach of the Golden Eagles. Jim enjoyed golfing, attending local sporting events and landscaping around the house. He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, closely following the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. He is survived by his wife, Rose Nystrom of Titusville; three sons, Dr. Michael J Nystrom and wife Roxana of San Jose, CA, Dr. Jeffrey D Nystrom of Erie, Brad L Nystrom and wife Cari of San Jose, CA; 6 grandchildren, William Nystrom of San Jose, CA, Grant Nystrom, Delaney Nystrom of Erie, Linnea Nystrom, Clark Nystrom, and Sylvia Nystrom of San Jose, CA. Jim was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Charles and John Nystrom; and a sister, Dorothy Harvison. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St., Titusville on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Funeral services will be conducted from the First Presbyterian Church on Friday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Terry Purvis Smith, officiating. A private interment will be held at the Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Titusville Alumni Association care of James A Nystrom Scholarship Fund (302 East Walnut Street, Titusville, PA 16354) or to the First Presbyterian Church of Titusville.
