Obituary of Wayne E. Proper

Mr. Wayne E. Proper, 89, resident of Southwoods Assisted Living, formerly of Dempseytown, passed away Tuesday evening, February 17, 2015 at the Titusville Area Hospital. Wayne was born in Oakland Township on November 18, 1925, to the late Lloyd L. and Lela Gharing Proper. He graduated from Colestock High School. He entered in the United States Air Force on February 2, 1944. He was stationed in Still Water, OK and Enid, OK. During his time in the service he attended the Aviation Cadet School, and was honorably discharged in Scottfield, IL on October 27, 1945. Wayne married June Van Horn on January 18, 1947; she preceded him death on December 7, 2008. He owned and operated Propers Used Cars in Dempseytown for over fifty years. He was a member of the Wallaceville United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion in Oil City and the Oakland Township Volunteer Fire Department. Wayne was an avid boater, skier, and swimmer. He loved to be on the water, taking his boats to the Tionesta Dam and Clarion River. He enjoyed traveling; he traveled to Hawaii, Austrailia, a World Fair, many cruises, and vacationed in Florida for over twenty years. Wayne enjoyed convertibles, deer hunting, camping, and hosting cook outs for relatives and friends to come and listen to musicians and socialize. He attended many air shows, including OshKosh Air shows, and even flew on the Concord. Wayne was instrumental in the dedication of the Veteran’s Memorial at the Dempseytown Lutheran Cemetery. Wayne is survived by two sons, Gary R. Proper and wife Joyce and Randy L. Proper and wife Cheryl, both of Dempseytown; a brother, Gerald Proper and wife Grace of Titusville; four grandchildren, Eric Proper of Naples, FL, Aaron Proper of Wallaceville, Randi Hibbard and husband Chris of Dempseytown, and Ricki Proper of Chicago; three great granddaughters, Kaylee, Aaden, and Molly Hibbard; and two nieces, Joyce Schwidt and husband Ed of Saegertown, and Sherry Shawgo and husband Jim of Bethel. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, June, and niece Robin Deemer. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington Street, Titusville, PA 16354, on Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at which time the funeral service will be conducted with Mrs. Jacqueline Wagner, officiating. Interment will be in Dempseytown Lutheran Cemetery.
