Obituary of Edward E. Vergith
Edward Eugene Vergith, 85, of 4732 State Route 417, Cooperstown, passed away Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Titusville Area Hospital.
He was born on January 13, 1925 in Titusville, PA. He was the son of Herman La Verne and Leona Pratt Vergith.
Ed was a World War II Army veteran serving in both the European and Pacific Theaters; first with the 801 st Aviation Engineers from 1943 to 1946, then the 82nd Airborne from 1946 to 1949. He belonged to the U.S. Army Reserves from 1949 until 1961.
A Universal Cyclops Steel employee, he retired after 37 ½ years in 1988. He drove school buses for 25 years at Titusville and Oil City area, and was the OC & T Railroad conductor from 1996 to 2003.
He was a member of the St. James Memorial Episcopal Church in Titusville, and also attended the Oakland United Methodist Church in Dempseytown.
Ed was a lifetime charter member of Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW in Titusville and a social member of Franklin VFW post 1835. A member of the V.E.T.S. honor guard, he was their past quartermaster and had been named as a volunteer of the month. He was also a DAV van driver and volunteered at the Oil City VA clinic. Ed was a lifetime member of the Oakland Fire Department having served as president, vice president, trustee, and volunteer firefighter.
He was married on July 21, 1952 to Louise Stevenson who, survives.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Vergith is survived by three daughters; Sandra, Kathy, and Patti, as well as, three nieces and two nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father James Ghering, a sister Pauline, and two brothers, William and Leroy, who died in infancy.
Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St., Titusville on Friday from 3 to 7 PM and attend the funeral service from the funeral home on Saturday at 11:00 AM with Pastor Jeff Sterling officiating.
Interment will be in Lamey cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Franklin V.E.T.S. honor guard.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard, VFW 411 9th St., Franklin, PA 16323 or to the charity of one’s choice.
