Obituary of Norma A. Newson

Norma Alice Myers Newson, 85, of Titusville, PA, passed away peacefully at home on November 9, 2010. Norma was born in Titusville on February 16, 1925, daughter of W.A. and Blanche Sorrell Myers. She was a proud 1943 graduate of Titusville High School and an active alumna. She graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in interior and retail design after which she worked in various local furniture stores. Following her marriage to Howard G. Newson in 1947, Norma dedicated her life to lovingly supporting her husband and his profession, raising her children, adoring her grandchildren, being a good friend to many, and making her home, church, and community welcoming and beautiful. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Titusville since high school. She sang in the church choir for 40 years, served as an Elder, Deacon, Presbyterian Homes representative, and enthusiastic volunteer. Her membership, volunteer, and professional affiliations include the Titusville Service League, Garden Club, READ literacy program, service as President of the YWCA and Associated Charities, and her work as a Titusville Area School District substitute art teacher. She enjoyed time at the family cottage, watercolor painting, golf, Big Band music and dancing, and attending THS sports and arts activities. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William R. (Randy) and Karen A. Newson of Girard, PA; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy N. and James T. Roos of North East, PA; grandchildren, Henry G. and his wife Lauren Geouge Newson of Lenoir, NC., Cassie A. Newson of Durham, NC, and Lynn A. Newson of Miami, FL.; sister-in-law, Mary Roessner of Painesville, OH; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years; parents and stepmother, Emma Hill Myers; sister and brother-in-law, Gretchen E. and Robert L. Smith; and brother, William J. Myers, who died in WWII. Friends are invited to call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville, PA. on Monday, November 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday, November 16 at 11:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 216 N. Franklin St., Titusville, PA with Dr. Barry E. Cressman, pastor, officiating. A private interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Titusville prior to the service for family and close friends.
